Gleanings: Columns from the Peterborough Examiner 2018 - 2021
by Rosemary Ganley Rosemary Ganley, a popular weekly columnist with the Peterborough Examiner in Ontario, has published a second collection of 128 of her recent, widely-read columns, ranging from politics to local human interest topics. This captivating collection of impressions of life, people, activities, losses, concerns and responses by the community, are all filtered through the astute mind and heart of observer-participant Rosemary Ganley. Her accessible writing style laced with humor and self-deprecation, charms readers of all ages, and often subtly moves them to a more progressive political stance, which is her intent. Starting in 2014, she began submitting columns to the Peterborough Examiner, soon to be on a weekly basis. The editor encouraged her to look for local stories with resonance. Her natural sense of affirmation and encouragement has led her to write about sports, the arts, religious institutions, social services, individual accomplishments, and occasionally to eloquently critique what she sees as poor leadership and foolish decisions. Rare as a historical document, highly personal and classic as essays reflecting their times, Gleanings will be long valued in the Peterborough community and beyond. The Greek philosopher Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” I have discovered that for me at this stage, the life that is not recorded in some way isn't satisfying, either. Thank you to all the editors and readers, mostly in my own community of Peterborough, Ontario, for the opportunity to live out this conviction. My hope is that others will experience place as I have - the joys and sorrows, the inspirations and losses, the kinship and comfort, and the concerns. I am touched that you will read my stories and opinions. Rosemary Ganley

Jamaica Journal: The Story of a Grassroots Canadian Aid Organization by Rosemary Ganley Jamaica Journal: The Story of a Grassroots Canadian Aid Organization is a collection of columns and other writings by Rosemary Ganley that outline the growth of Jamaican Self-Help, a non-governmental organization founded by the Ganleys in 1980. JSH raised funds and awareness, and with wide community support transferred 10 million dollars to Jamaican projects in its 35-year history, while facilitating service-learning trips to Jamaica for 1000 Canadian youth. By bringing Jamaican leaders to Canada to speak in a series entitled The Ganley Lectures and participating widely in community events, JSH had a lasting impact on its home community of Peterborough, Ontario. Written over a 40-year period, Rosemary’s reports from both Jamaica and Canada show her understanding of the dilemmas, strength and ingenuity of the Jamaican people, and as a memoir, Jamaica Journal reveals her inner growth in knowledge and insight. With a gift for the vivid phrase, a searching intelligence and a compassionate heart, Rosemary Ganley offers us a first-hand account of the motivation that can lead to successful global development, education and community-building, south and north.
